Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh (R – Yucaipa) presented Senate Concurrent Resolution 163 on the Senate Floor recognizing May as California Tourism Month and celebrating the importance of tourism to California’s economy, culture, and communities.
California remains one of the world’s premier travel destinations, welcoming millions of visitors each year to experience the state’s natural beauty, cultural attractions, local businesses, and regional destinations. In 2025, California’s tourism industry generated nearly $159 billion in tourism-related spending and supported approximately 1.2 million jobs statewide.
“California is a world-class destination with unparalleled beauty and a welcoming spirit that invites visitors to experience all that the Golden State has to offer,” said Senator Ochoa Bogh. “Our vibrant tourism sector fuels many small businesses, which in turn creates many jobs and provides substantial tax revenue that is used to fund essential public services.”
The resolution recognizes the significant contributions of California’s hospitality industry, including family-owned restaurants, hotels, tour operators, and other small businesses that provide significant economic and social benefits to the state.
SCR 163 also highlights the work of Visit California and the state’s network of destination marketing organizations, which promote travel to destinations across the state and help maintain California’s position as the nation’s leading tourism economy.
“California Tourism Month is an important reminder about the power of travel and the benefits it delivers to every corner of the state,” said Emellia Zamani Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for the California Travel Association. “We appreciate Senator Ochoa Bogh giving us a platform through SCR 163 to tell a fuller story about the industry’s contributions to California’s economy.”
As part of the Senate Floor presentation, Senator Ochoa Bogh welcomed Davis Meyer, Vice President of Government and Industry Relations with Visit Greater Palm Springs, and Travis Scott, CEO of Visit Big Bear. The two tourism leaders represent California’s more than 300 destination marketing organizations that support regional tourism and economic development throughout the state.
“Tourism is the number one economic driver in Greater Palm Springs, supporting one in every four local jobs and helping sustain the businesses, experiences, and quality of life that make our community so special,” said Scott White, President & CEO, Visit Greater Palm Springs. “California Tourism Month is an important reminder of the vital role travel plays in strengthening local economies and communities across the state.
“Tourism is more than an economic driver in Big Bear — it is the heartbeat of our community. SCR 163 rightly recognizes the essential role travel plays in supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and sustaining communities across California,” said Travis Scott, CEO Visit Big Bear. “In Big Bear, visitor spending helps protect livelihoods, strengthen public services, and showcase the natural beauty and outdoor experiences that make our state so extraordinary. Visit Big Bear is proud to support Senator Ochoa Bogh’s recognition of May 2026 as California Tourism Month and her call for Californians to travel within our state as an act of civic pride.”
The resolution further recognizes tourism’s role in strengthening community pride, supporting cultural exchange, and fostering appreciation for California’s diverse regions and people.
